It is one of the questions we hear most: “I have a limited budget, what should I do first?”. The honest answer is that it depends on your business and where you are today. But there is a logic that helps you decide and avoids the most expensive mistake: spending money to attract people to something that isn’t yet ready to turn them into customers.

We started this way too. Before founding the agency we launched our own online stores in 2019, with limited resources and making these very decisions. This is what we learned.

First, the foundation: people must be able to find and trust you

Before investing in attracting visitors, make sure that when they arrive they find something convincing. That means, at the very least:

  • A simple, fast and clear website explaining what you do, who for and how to get in touch.
  • A consistent image: logo, colours and tone repeated everywhere.
  • Contact channels that work and someone who replies quickly.
  • A complete Google Business Profile, if you serve a specific area.

You don’t need a huge website. You need one that does its job well. It is the piece everything else rests on, and the one that turns visits from ads, SEO or social media into customers. If you’re unsure about the investment, it helps to know how much a website costs.

Then choose the channel based on how people buy from you

This is where every business is different. Some clues:

If people search for you when they have the need

A plumber, an accountancy firm, a garage or a clinic. People search on Google when they need it. Here local SEO and search ads usually work best, because they find you right at the moment of deciding.

If you need to spark interest

A clothing brand, a new product or something people don’t know they want. This is where social media ads (Meta or TikTok) and content shine, because they let you show the product to people who aren’t looking for it yet. We compare them in depth in Google Ads or Meta Ads.

If you sell to businesses

Sales cycles are longer and trust matters a lot. What usually works is a good website with real case studies, LinkedIn, content that shows you know your field and organised follow-up of every lead.

If you live off repeat customers

Restaurants, hair salons, neighbourhood shops or e-commerce with frequent purchases. Here email, social media and good after-sales care pay off, because bringing a customer back costs less than winning a new one.

Social media: yes, but with a goal

Being on social media “because you have to” takes a lot of time and rarely delivers results. If you invest in social media, decide what for: building trust, driving traffic to the website or selling directly. Each goal needs a different type of content and is measured differently.

It is better to do one channel well than five badly.

A phased plan

This is the order we usually recommend to businesses starting out or wanting to organise their marketing:

  1. Phase 1 · Foundation. A clear website, a consistent brand, fast contact and tracking installed.
  2. Phase 2 · One main channel. Chosen based on how people buy from you. Test it, measure it and adjust it for a few weeks.
  3. Phase 3 · Optimise. Improve what already works: ads, pages, offers and lead follow-up.
  4. Phase 4 · Expand. Once the first channel is profitable, add the next: SEO if you started with ads, or ads if you started with SEO.

This order isn’t a law, but it avoids the most frustrating situation: paying for ads that lead to a website that doesn’t convince.

How to split a small budget

Without offering magic figures, some criteria help:

  • Separate the initial investment from the monthly one. The website and brand are paid once; advertising, SEO and social media, every month.
  • Don’t spread a little across many channels. Concentrate your monthly budget where intent is highest.
  • Keep a share for measuring and learning. Without data you won’t know what to scale.
  • Give every euro a goal. Leads, sales or qualified visits, and check every month whether it is met.

Typical mistakes on a small budget

  • Spending everything on a logo or a spectacular website and leaving nothing to attract customers.
  • Opening profiles on every network and abandoning them a month later.
  • Launching ads without tracking conversions.
  • Changing strategy every two weeks without giving the data time.
  • Copying a big competitor without having their budget.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a website if I already sell on Instagram?

It is highly recommended. Social networks are borrowed ground: they change their rules and reach whenever they want. A website is yours, gives you credibility, lets you appear on Google and lets you measure what happens.

What delivers results sooner, SEO or advertising?

Advertising can bring leads within the first days if the website is ready. SEO takes longer but keeps bringing visits without paying per click. That is why many businesses start with ads and build SEO in parallel.

Can I do the marketing myself?

Yes, especially at the beginning. What matters is dedicating time consistently and measuring. As the business grows, delegating usually pays off because you free up time and avoid expensive mistakes.

How much should I invest in marketing?

It depends on your sector, margins and growth goals. Rather than a fixed percentage, what helps is knowing how much you can pay to win a customer and how many customers you need.
