When people talk about branding, many think of a logo. But the logo is only the most visible part. Branding is how your business presents itself and how it is remembered: what you say, how you say it and how everything you do looks, from the website to the invoice.

And it isn’t just for big brands. For a small business, a clear brand can be what makes a customer choose you over the one next door, even if you charge a little more.

Branding, visual identity and logo: not the same thing

  • Branding is the whole process of building a brand: strategy, personality, messages and image.
  • Visual identity is the graphic part of that work: logo, colours, typefaces, image style…
  • The logo is one piece of the visual identity: the brand’s signature.

A logo without strategy behind it may look good, but it won’t set you apart. A strategy without a consistent visual identity won’t be remembered.

What a brand includes

A complete brand identity usually has two parts:

The strategic part

  • What you do and who for, said in one sentence.
  • What makes you different from competitors and why customers should care.
  • Your personality and tone: friendly, technical, premium, playful…
  • Your key messages: the three or four ideas you want people to associate with you.

The visual part

  • Logo and its variants (horizontal, vertical, symbol only, positive and negative).
  • Colour palette and typefaces.
  • Photography, icon and graphic style.
  • A simple brand guide explaining how to use all of the above.
  • Applications: website, social media, business cards, signage, uniforms, packaging, presentations…

The second part works much better when the first is clear.

Why it affects sales

A well-built brand doesn’t sell on its own, but it helps you sell in everything else:

  • It builds trust: a business with a polished image looks more serious and reliable, especially online, where customers don’t see you in person.
  • It makes you recognisable: if everything looks the same, people remember you and recognise you in an ad or on a shelf.
  • It justifies your price: a brand perceived as professional supports higher prices better and depends less on discounts.
  • It makes advertising more effective: ads from a recognisable brand usually perform better than those from an unknown one.
  • It makes daily work easier: with clear rules, every post, presentation or flyer is quicker to make and turns out better.
People don’t just buy a product: they buy trust in the person selling it.

Signs your brand needs a change

  • Your logo looks bad on mobile, on your Instagram profile or at small sizes.
  • Every material (website, social media, flyers) looks like it belongs to a different company.
  • You struggle to explain in one sentence what sets you apart.
  • Your business has changed, but your image is still the one from years ago.
  • You are always compared on price because you don’t convey anything else.
  • You feel embarrassed showing your website or business card to an important client.

When is the right time to invest?

There are moments when it makes particular sense:

  1. When starting out, before printing anything or launching the website, so you don’t have to redo everything later.
  2. Before investing in advertising, because ads multiply what you already have, good or bad.
  3. When you grow or change audience, price or services.
  4. When you open a new channel, such as an online store or international sales.

You don’t need a big project to start. Sometimes it is enough to organise what already exists: define colours and typefaces, clean up the logo and apply it consistently everywhere.

What a branding process looks like

A well-planned brand project usually has these stages:

  1. Discovery: understanding the business, customers, competitors and goals.
  2. Strategy: defining positioning, personality and messages.
  3. Design: creating the visual identity and testing it in real applications.
  4. Roll-out: applying it to the website, social media and other materials, with a usage guide.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to create a brand?

It depends on the scope: redesigning a logo is not the same as creating a complete identity with strategy, guide and applications. At Avar, our branding service starts at €220 as a guide price, adjusted to each project. You can work it out in the configurator.

Can I change my logo without losing customers?

Yes, if the change is well planned. Often an evolution that keeps the recognisable elements and improves legibility and consistency is enough. It is worth announcing it and applying it everywhere at the same time.

Does a small business need a brand guide?

A simple version, yes. One or two pages with the logo, colours, typefaces and usage examples stop every person or supplier from applying the brand their own way.

What comes first, the brand or the website?

Ideally the brand, because the website should reflect it. If time doesn’t allow, they can be worked on in parallel, but with the visual identity defined before designing the pages.
